“The emphasis in this film is on “being,” it is therefore no surprise that it is Hamlet that the children are staging, even though its most famous phrase is never uttered. Every shot is meticulously framed to emphasize a certain state of being and becoming. To say that Schanelec’s images are contemplative would be misleading. The shots linger so that a moment in time may be captured. A moment when actors cease to act and the truth of their being suddenly becomes apparent. This is perhaps why the film starts and ends with animals—beings that do not act, but just are.
